"How to begin? No beginning... never ending reverberation," Antoine Beuger writes in the accompanying notes to Leo Svirsky's River Without Banks. Dedicated to his first piano teacher Irena Orlov, River Without Banks is a mesmerizing, emotional collection of pieces that are simultaneously complex and fluid. The title River Without Banks comes from a chapter of musicologist Genrikh "Henry" Orlov's profound work Tree of Music. In said chapter, Orlov traces the history of sacred music from the Western and Eastern tradition and how the forms (of the chant, raga etc.) sought to eliminate the division between the physical and the spiritual-the bank and the river. Arranged for two pianos with accompaniment from strings, trumpet, and electronics, this is Svirsky's first piece to approach the history of the piano and the possibilities of the recording studio, and his deepest dive yet into exploring the instability of listening and it's transformation of musical semantics and affect. Like Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project, Svirsky overlays romantic musical gestures to create a lush unfamiliarity. No sooner than each track begins the next moment unfurls beneath it, cascading time and blurring perception of past and present. Akin to a multidimensional Rzewski thematic interpretation, Svirsky's music defies genre-classification or classical ideology while it's virtuosity clearly stems from somewhere from within disciplined traditions. Continuously revisiting, revising, and renewing it's emotional core, River Without Banks is less an album of songs than songs of a singular, unlocatable album. Performed by the composer with assistance from Britton Powell, Max Eilbacher, Leila Bordreuil, Tim Byrnes, and recorded by Al Carlson.

Most complete coverage of Guadalcanal I have read.

I have read dozens of WWII books and many touched on the Guadalcanal Battle. I thoroughly enjoyed The Big E and its involvement in the battle. Thas book covered the entire conflict from start to finish. Frankly, I hated to see the book end. The courage and tenacity of all those involved was amazing. To understand the miserable conditions in the area where these men fought was inspiring. To see this battle through the eyes of the American forces and Japanese forces was an added bonus. Thank you for a great read!!!

Shines a light on the reality of the War in the Pacific
Format: Audiobook
Well-written and it really laid out all of the details of how this battle unfolded. I listed to the audio-book, and it was helpful to have the PDF to see a map. How the soldiers on each side endured the battles in the Pacific Theater is beyond me. Man's inhumanity to man that result in this battle outlined here is depressing, but also the sacrifice of those called on to endure and suffer through that inhumanity is equally inspiring and humbling to those whose lives are so comfortable in comparison.

Good book
Format: Hardcover
If Ww2 interest u at all then u want to read this book. I have read the other books on this subject ( so why read another one?) well what i luv about this book is that because so much time has passed that most all of the people in this book are gone & so much more info has been released about these battles, that the combatants ( especially the higher officers are written about as if they are human (mistakes & warts & all) & not like they were all Bull Halsey type Gods which they were certainly not as in most all the books released within the 1st 30 yrs of the war. This makes for a much different & more interesting story about these battles than even the original books on the subject. You come to understand the where & whyfores better, by knowing the real true strenghts & weakness's & fears that drove these men. Hey they are all the bravest of heroes to me. But the were not perfect, & because of this, mistakes were made, that were really not acknowledged or maybe not even known about in early books on WW2

Great structure

I had to get the book for class, so did not exactly get it because I “wanted to.” It was a good read though. I liked the structure of each section. Everything simple enough to understand while also diving a bit deeper.

An excellent resource for any intelligence collector or analyst. The chapters are written by world-class experts in each discipline with an excellent final chapter on collection management written by Drs. Lowenthal and Clark. Each chapter defines the elements of the particular intelligence discipline, its history and producers, as well as how the INT is managed and explores likely future trends. An extensively researched and documented text that is nonetheless an approachable resource that would make an excellent addition to any intelligence related syllabus.
