Pioneers: Volume II – Dragon Tooth Gold Series finds the second generation young Callahan adults midsummer, 1860. The nation is on the brink of Civil War. Eli, the oldest, and the twins, Roland and Jacques, join the Army Supply Service under the pressure of their mother Anna and their grandmother Denise. Still serving their country but safe from the front lines if war should break out, they work for the Quartermaster at Fort Leavenworth on short hauls to supply bases on the Santa Fe Trail. Disaster strikes in the form of a tornado that kills their parents and severely injures their younger sister, Suzette. After the burial of their mother and the abandonment of the search for their father, the boys take a contract to deliver a heavy load of supplies to the Army garrison at Santa Fe. They head to Fort Leavenworth to load up and head west. Denise plans to take Suzette by ship to meet up with the boys in Los Angeles, however, Suzette has plans of her own. She runs away and waits for her brothers on the trail.

Pioneers is cast in the 1860’s with the country on the brink of the Civil War. The Callahan children, our young pioneers, experience the Santa Fe trail with all the perils of the times: renegades, Indians, storms, disease and danger greeting them at every turn of the trail.. Crossing the trail took four months on the average and many fell by the wayside, never to realize their dreams of a new life in the west. The history and living the reality of the greatest migration in American history is woven with historical individuals and laced with the sights and the history of the times. I want my readers to experience the tenacity of our ancestors and appreciate the will and endurance that it took to simply survive, let alone succeed at a new life. My characters are unique in that they were wealthy with the riches of their father’s estate. They could have chosen an easy life but they chose the more difficult path. These young heroes are meant to be role models for the young, adopted sons and daughters of the aged. Through action packed adventure, everyone has the opportunity to experience Horace Greeley’s sage advice, “Go west young man, go west.”

About the Author

Kent McGrew has taken a refreshing break from years of technical writing to bring his readers Dragon Tooth Gold; an epic historical fiction of gold mining in the American West. Born during WWII, McGrew was raised by immigrant grandparents in the Sacramento Valley. He was drawn into mining partnerships with his father at age fourteen where he discovered the science that should be the bulwark of every effort. After three mining venture failures, he attended the Montana School of Mines for degrees in Mineral Dressing Engineering, an odd corner of extractive metallurgy recovering minerals and metals from ores.

Five years in college for a B.S., three years in the US Army, and a year with a Teaching Fellowship for his M.S. Degree, were beneficial interruptions to a career that has spanned sixty years. Project work took him to every continent except Antarctica, where he literally missed the plane tour from New Zealand.

Under the pen name of Auntie GEM (Government, Education & Mining), he wrote weekly articles about the history and current events of gold mining in the Black Hills. Three years of anti-mining initiatives during the South Dakota general elections kept him busy writing and speaking on tours around the state. His work appeared weekly in the Lead Daily Call, and spread to every weekly newspaper in the Dakotas.

Over the years, McGrew has unmasked a wide variety of mining scams. His Five Axioms of Mining Scams, published in 1994, are still widely quoted and woven into the fabric of Dragon Tooth Gold.

The mining vagabond settled in Congress, Arizona twenty-eight years ago when he met Sally - a woman he couldn’t pass up - his gold fever cured forever with this amazing find.

Kent continues to mentor and teach both children and adults, sharing science, math, and mining; avoiding the perils and pitfalls of retirement.

Like new! Great deal and works perfectly
Looks and works like brand new! The magnetic charging is solid, and the response time is flawless. The pressure sensitivity and barrel roll features are game-changers for drawing. It was well-packaged and arrived super fast. Getting a Pencil Pro at this price is a steal—saved a lot compared to buying new. Definitely a great find!

Apple Pencil Pro… definitely an upgrade from the original Pencil and Pencil 2!
Purchased as an open‑box, like‑new item, and it arrived exactly as described. The box was opened but taped closed and the wrapper was still on the pencil. It didn’t have any charge out of the box, but as soon as I snapped it onto the side of my iPad, it synced instantly and worked right away. I charged it fully that first night and have been using it normally ever since. I’m using it with my 13” iPad Air M2, and it’s great. The double‑tap on the barrel to bring up the menu is super convenient, and everything works flawlessly. Zero issues so far. For basically half the price of a brand‑new one, this feels like an excellent buy and absolutely worth what I paid. Apple hardware is built well, the white looks nice and clean… I have no worries about longevity at all. Excellent product from Apple as usual.

Super easy to set up and start drawing
I was honestly shocked at how easy it was to connect it to my iPad. Opened the box and was expecting to see more inside of it, decided to see what happens when I put it up to my iPad and it connected instantly. Works great with my iPad m2 with touch sensitivity and spiral twist stuff in procreate. Really happy to not have to plug it in to charge. I’m planning to use this daily, so I needed to make sure it would actually feel good to hold in my hand and oh baby let me tell you, it does. It’s really smooth drawing wise, using it is intuitive. Fits on the iPad snug. I’d say give it a shot

It works, but there’s some improvement needed.
The Apple Pencil Pro is easy to write with, not heavy like the other reviews made it seem, very nice and simple design, great battery life, great pressure sensitivity, and the squeeze feature and wireless charging is a nice touch. Theres one issue though, I’m an artist and student and I do a lot of work on my iPad. The pencil (or my iPad) glitches and randomly and switches me over to the eraser tool in the middle of me writing/drawing even when I turned the squeeze feature off.

Wonderful product!
I got the Apple Pencil (USB-C) a few months ago and I’ve honestly been so impressed with it. It pairs instantly with my iPad and starts working right away — no complicated setup at all. The USB-C charging is super convenient, especially since I already use the same charger for other devices. The writing experience feels incredibly smooth and natural. It’s very responsive with no noticeable lag, which makes taking notes, highlighting, and drawing feel effortless. I also love how precise it is — it makes writing neatly and editing small details really easy. It’s lightweight but still feels high-quality and durable. For note-taking, journaling, planning, or casual drawing, it does exactly what I need without the higher price tag of the Pro version. Overall, I think it’s a great value and a perfect choice if you want reliable performance without paying extra for features you may not need.
