Reginald John "Rex" Whistler (1905–1944)

Programme for a George VI State Performance

of Tchaikovsky's "The Sleeping Princess" in Honour of French President Albert François Lebrun

Royal Opera House, London

22nd March 1939

39.1 cm x 22.6 cm

Elaborately shaped, die-cut cream card covers with embossing, printed images and gold printed Royal crown and cypher. Gilt cord and tassels to the spine. Further illustrations and vignettes within (not by Rex Whistler), with details of performers over 12 pages.

An ornate souvenir programme for the State Performance hosted by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at the Royal Opera House on 22 March 1939 in honour of the President of the French Republic, Albert François Lebrun (1871-1950) and his wife Madame Lebrun. The performers included Margot Fonteyn, Robert Helpmann, William Chappell, Frank Staff and Frederick Ashton with Sir Thomas Beecham conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Widely considered to be one of Rex Whistler's most beautiful printed designs this theatre program is a particularly remarkable and imaginative creation, considering the usual status accorded to such ephemeral objects. Along with the design for the shaped and embossed card, Whistler provided the cover illustration with the arms of France and England guarded by the national emblems of the English lion and Gallic rooster ('le coq gaulois'). For the night of the performance Rex Whistler had also decorated the Royal Box with similar motifs

The pooch is on Cloud No 9
Color: Blue
Lucky loves everything about this (blue) octopus. It has squeakers in all the right places and the crinkle sound adds to his fun. He’s almost 70lbs and extremely strong, and can be an aggressive player and chewer. So far, it has held up extremely well for the tug-of-war games and crazy shaking play. It’s well worth the money. I also want to mention that this toy is true to size. I have too often ordered dog toys that turned out to be much smaller than advertised.

Large, excellent toy with many squeakers!
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
This toy is excellent! I’m super happy with this purchase. My dog loves squeakers and there are so many in this toy, plus stuffing for her to rip out, and crinkle paper to take the sensory experience up another notch! It’s also more durable than many other plush-type dog toys, and is larger than expected which is a plus in my book. For size reference, both dogs are around 40lbs. I will be buying another as soon as this one is demolished!

Huge and fun. Good for two dogs to play with together.
Color: Yellow
This dog toy is great! And it's HUGE. Each tentacle crinkles, and the dogs love to play tug-of-war with it. It seems to be holding up well, too. It seemed a bit pricy for a dog toy, but it turns out it was worth it.

My dogs new favorite toy!
Color: Blue
His new favorite toy! My dog absolutely loves it!!! It’s much bigger than I thought it would be so my dog has to be careful when he’s running with it because he will trip on the legs of the octopus. The best part is there is a little squeaker in the bottom of each leg! Bonus!!! If your dog chews up stuffed animals, this will be no different. It is a stuffed animal. My baby just likes to carry it around and squeak it a 1000 times a day. Don’t mind my crazy voice in the video. That’s the voice I use when he’s excited about a toy. He greets me every day with his octopus.🥰
